2025 MCBA/ Boundless Residency Open Call
Ends on
The Boundless Residency program provides artists living outside of Minnesota* the opportunity to create innovative new work in Minnesota Center for Book Arts’ fully-equipped studios for letterpress printing, bookbinding, papermaking, screenprinting, paper marbling, and related arts. This new program is supported generously by Cathy Ryan and Doris Engibous.
At over 12,000 square feet, MCBA is the largest space dedicated to book arts in the nation, and the only center in North America with public access to foreign language type. Providing studio access is central to MCBA’s mission, and we are excited to share our unique resources—and expand ties with the national and international book arts communities—through this new residency program.
This residency provides artists living outside of Minnesota with the time and space to work deeply on projects that require MCBA’s specialized equipment. See here for a complete description of our studios and available equipment. We welcome artists to apply at any stage of their career as long as they have sufficient experience to work independently in their studio area(s) of choice and can demonstrate such experience in their application materials. MCBA can help arrange one on one tutorials or technical assistance at an additional fee. Resident artists will receive an in depth orientation and have 24/7 keycard access to MCBA’s studios during their residency.
Artists may apply for a 2–4 week residency and will be provided a $1,000 stipend per week. Housing, meals, and travel expenses are not included. The artist is responsible for securing housing and arranging their own travel needs.
A three person jury panel including MCBA’s Executive Director, Director of Exhibitions & Artist Programs, and an anonymous outside guest juror will select 2–3 artists per year through an open call. Strong proposals will address how the planned work will use resources at MCBA and why the proposed project is important to the artist’s practice. See our application guidelines for a full list of application materials. Applications must be submitted through Submitable by Friday, August 15, 2025 at 11:59 PM CT. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
